UK Internship for US Student

Unforgiving Minute

Hello,

I am an American student at the Wharton Business School in the US, but I would like to intern this summer and eventually work at a firm in the UK.

What is the process for finding banking internships in the UK? Is it possible for an American to apply directly to the UK-based positions? The firm may be American (Goldman, etc.) but the position in the UK.

Thank you for all your help.

I am curious about this too. I am a student at Cornell University in the US, but I also have British citizenship. Many of the applications I have looked at for firms in the UK ask for a UK phone number and UK test scores...and they won't let you proceed until the correct characters are filled it.

Overall, how keen are these companies in having US students work for them right out of college?

Hi !!

I guess you should probably search for an internship in an American company in the UK. They migh probably look for American guys and the employment process might be easier. Or, the easiest but most expensive solution is to ask a placement agency to find an internship in a UK company for you! I know Intership in London www.internshipinlondon.com very well as they found me an internship in London last year. I was very pleased with my internship and it was found very rapidly (within 4 weeks) ! But it is quit a sum of money for sûre (700GBP)!

If you are not from Europe, you just need a valid visa to work in the UK and they can search an internship for you or you can find by yourself hoprfully.

I'm slightly amazed here.

To the OP from Wharton and student from Cornell - if your careers office is anything like the careers office at the M7-group school I go to, they should have tons of advice for you on this.

Certainly my experience has been that MBB recruit from the US for internships in all locations globally. At the smaller firms, their US recruiter can usually connect you to a London recruiter.

However UK immigration policy is such that it's a total nightmare for London offices to employ you if you don't have UK or EU citizenship - whilst the big firms will jump through the hoops to get you in, the smaller firms might be unwilling to do so. Best to clarify upfront what the firm's policy is on work permit sponsorship.

Good luck.
