Is a career in consulting really that important?

Hi guys

Thought I could get some insights from you guys.

So I have been thinking lately about consulting career (again). Most of my friends are in big 3 and big 4. I am basically a industry guy and have around 6-7 years of industry experience. Then did a top tier MBA and back to working in industry on a contract job at the moment.

However I couldn't decide for the life of me as to whether consulting is for me or is it just that initial urge to become a consultant?

Now I am thinking of applying to consulting again. Sometimes I feel that I am too 'old' to start a consulting career, not to mention the travelling and the stress and all. I am comfortable working in industry and actually feel that my experience will be more respected in industry than in consulting. Whenever I try to apply to a consulting job and when I look at the hiring managers, they are at least 5 years younger than me (direct recruits i guess from university).

On the other hand I feel like (rather I was told) having some consulting experience on my CV will help my future career growth.

It's certainly not too late, although I'd be keen to understand why a career in Consulting interests you before advising you to pursue it.

This is in no way an 'easy option' and I cannot see any reason in your post as to why you're personally considering it, other than long-term benefits from a Big 4 brand on the CV.

Why not put research into some consulting firms that specifically interest you? Apply and attend some interviews to learn more from the people who 'know'.

To be honest, most consulting firms will lose interest at the first mention of "travel and stress".
