Hi - can anyone advise on the current market for freelance strategy consulting?

As far as I know the routes in are:

- agencies such as mindbench, freshminds

- go direct to consultancies and contract for them when they need more capacity

- find clients direct

Anyone got any other names or options to add to this list? Also how is the market right now?

Agencies, consultancies, direct. That pretty much covers it. You could add private equity if you have industry specific experience relating to their current deals.

Right now it is tough and IMO a very small market at the best of times. Clients struggle to find people when they need them but they don't need them very often on the strategy side. There are more opportunities in programme/project management depending on your background.

I agree with apple. Very few agencies provide intros to strat work because....

...agents know very little about strategy, whereas they do know what a PM does

...agents do not generally have senior enough contacts, they do know project hiring managers

...strat projects are short-ish compared to transformation projects, so the income from comission is smaller

to do freelance strat work you need to be senior or experienced enough to network your own gigs, or else sub through a consultancy that cannot afford to keep a big perm roster on its books.

Thanks Apple - anymore agencies than those I've listed that are good for temp assignments.
