Hi all,

I am looking to make a move from industry to strategy consulting. I did history at Uni and am currently 1.5 years into a good retail graduate scheme but have decided retail is not for me.

I have two questions that I would greatly appreciate any advice on:

1. I have an interview with a strat consultants called Cognosis and was wondering if anyone could offer incite into this company to help with my interview as I have limited inside knowledge of the industry?

2. From the research I have done getting into strategy consulting from industry at a young age seems to be pretty tough but my CV has got me to interview at the first point of trying. What are my chances therefore of applying to MBB?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice offered.

Delper

Hi Delper,

from my experience, age doesn't really matter that much. Your business judgement and preparation do matter a lot though. Plus applying for MBB entry positions you will be competing with people straight out of college, which should give you some advantage.

Do you know if Cognosis does case interviews? If yes, feel free to check out www.skypeinterview.com that a group of MBA students has put together.

Hi Delper,

1. From the limited amount I've heard Cognosis have blue chip clients within FMCG but none in retail. They work with alcohol and tobacco so not a company if you have an aversion to either of these areas. Seem to be growing strongly (advert on TC) and compete with McK for most of their work.

2. I work with one from MBB and they are incredibly particular; you'd expect nothing less. The standard of application they receive are very high (1st from Oxbridge, blue chip or consulting internships and extra-curriculars are standard for graduate entrants). I'd agree with Zakmba that age doesn't matter so much as what you've done with your time. They need very fast progression, ambition, responsibility and a superb analytical ability.

Not knowing very much at all about your background it's hard to say and this may sound harsh but you need more than a 2:1 and a retail grad scheme - something different that shows you're top tier worthy. No harm in applying but you've got to have your game face on!

Good luck!

Hi Delper,

good luck to you!

Would you be so kind as to keep us posted about your experience with Cognosis? I'm applying to a similar profile consultancy and would be happy about any information - what sort of questions they ask, whether there is a case interview etc.

Would really appreciate your help.

Many thanks
