I have just relocated to the UK from NZ and want to get some advice on how to progress my career in consultancy. Should I contact firms directly or should i just concentrate on watching the standard job sites?

Mark - I think it's fair to say you need to be using a mix of channels to maximise your exposure to the jobs out there and to give yourself the greatest chances of success. With regards to recruitment firms, best to find one or two that you like working with rather than spraying your CV out to dozens of them. I'd suggest you have a read of the following report which shows all the application channels our readers are using and the firms they recommend you use in each of the channels. Thanks for this, would it be best it i sent my CV out to companies like Accenture, Mckinsey, BCG, Bain and IBM, and also contact BLT, Michael Page, Prism and Astbury Marsden?

I would contact a recruitment agency first (only 1 or 2, you will be devalued as a candidate if agencies find out that dozens of recruitment agencies are representing you). They will be able to give you advice on improving your CV and also they will have a view on which firms you are likely to succeed in securing an interview with - a useful insight.

You don't want a consulting firm to receive your CV twice (makes you look desperate!), so work with the agency to find out which consultancies they can put you forward for and then complement this with direct applications to the other consulting firms that interest you. Use any contacts you've got at consulting firms to get your CV passed on to the HR team with a recommendation from within that you should be interviewed. Done in combination, these approaches will land you a good spread of interviews and maximise your chances of success. Hope that helps, Tony

Thanks again. This will be my last questions
1. Would it be of benefit to attend the London Career fair in October
2. If I have no contacts within consulting firms should I contact the HR department directly and introduce myself
