post ACA - best path into consultancy

R

Hi there,

I am on the verge of ACA qualification from PwC London. I do not see my future in a finance department and want to move into something more commercial (strategy consultancy really appeals).

I just wondered what the best path into consultancy would be for me at this stage? Should I look to do an MBA or is this something that a firm would sponsor? Should I apply direct to a number of consultancy firms and if so, what would they look for in a newly qualified accountant wanting to move into consultancy?

Are there any agencies which recruit into consultancy?

strat

I'd say apply directly to the firms you are interested in - it can slightly increase your chances as it's cheaper for the firm and shows that you've put some effort in to thinking about it. As a new ACA, you probably wouldn't join a strat firm at the same level as a top MBA, but you don't need to get an MBA before applying; some are definitely in the market for your skill set right now. What would they look for? A (very) good degree, demonstrated relevant experience, analytical ability and commercial nous, mainly. Good luck!
