Internal vs external recruiter?

Suppose you get contacted by a recruitment agency for a role at a firm where you already have the contact details of an internal recruiter.

Ethics aside, who of the two would you rather pursue to get the best possible deal for you?

My gut feeling tells me that the internal recruiter would try to offer me a lower salary package based on my current one, which I have been told is below going rates.

Thoughts?

So one has actively sought you out, approached you, and engaged you with the position and company, and the other has not, even though they presumably know of the position within their own company, and have the means to contact you.

Which one do you want handling your application?
