OU MBA OR ANOTHER DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE?

#1 OU MBA OR ANOTHER DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE?
10/03/2005 16:35

Andrew

I did my first Masters (in Information Systems) 8 years ago and now feel the need to continue stretching the grey matter and equip myself with business skills, tools & techniques for the IT business, and am thinking about a distance learning MBA. My first Masters already gives me a third of the points for the Open Univerity MBA, but I am not sure whether to take this route (with the flexibility required by a young family) or a more structured, respected & expensive course. Any thoughts, given I want business skills & techniques and don't intend becoming a Management Consultant? Many thanks

For what it is worth, I am currently studying the MBA with the OU (with a young family - twins who are 1). I am finding it an excellent course as it is well blended - rather than doing finance, economics, organisational behaviour as separate courses they are well interlinked. There are various people on the course - many of whom have no interest in going into MC. the MBA is different to other degrees as it is very applied (many assignements refer to your own organisation) and will certainly change the way you think. (BTW - I don't work for the OU in case you are wondering!).

If you are interested in doing an MBA for your own business, then I reccomend choosing any course that suits your own educational, financial and time considerations. However if you are considering working for any 'blue chip' or large service organisation than you must attend an accredited course at one of the better business schools. You will be competing for jobs with those who have attended the latter. Good luck

Duncan - many thanks for the feedback; my kids are a little older, but it is good news that you are enjoying the course & it fits in well with family life. Best regards, Andrew

Many thanks for the feedback. I think that the OU MBA is accredited with all 3 of the accrediting bodies. Best regards, Andrew
