Summer internships -help and tips anyone?

#1 Summer internships -help and tips anyone?

Hello everyone!

I'm new to this forum, I'm thinking about applying for internships in consulting and I have a few questions.... reading your threads and, tbh, many employers web-sites, I have the feeling the big ones (bcg,McKinsey,Wayman..) recruit mostly from the Oxbridge area... now, I'm studying applied maths in edinburgh and I am wondering: I am being irrational and should I aim for lower-profile firms? I know it's always worth a try, I just don't want to give them too much importance if I know I have no chance to get a place there...

Right, that said, any suggestions of other firms, maybe less known, that offer summer internships? I've been looking at forums, targetjob.com etc, but I might (most likely) have missed some...

Any tips for my CV or online applications? Books you'd recommend to get a grasp of the current status of economy and consulting world (and about consulting in general) that would be helpful IF I manage to get an interview?

Thanks, and sorry for the long question!

In terms of internships, I'd suggest keeping an eye on www.ratemyplacement.co.uk as I've seen various consultancies listing their internships there over the years.

As regards getting a better understanding of the consulting industry - yes this definitely helps make you stand out from the masses and downloading our careers guide would be a good place to start:

Hope this helps and all the best
