Graduate from a non-business background

#1 Graduate from a non-business background

I have just graduated from Durham University with a 2:1 in Zoology and I was wondering if I would have to consider taking a masters in Business before I can apply for a role in management consultancy? I was also wondering if there are any recruitment firms which specialise in finding grads jobs in this sector?

Many thanks

C

Depends.

One thing is true management consulting with McKinsey, Bain, BCG, OW, Booz, LEK, RB etc.

You might be at a disadvantage there.

One thing is make-pretend management consulting (which is really IT implementation and change management consulting or PMO) with the Big 4 and ACN.

In this case they are happy to take on any kind of graduate, Durham is definitely a priority university. Your background won't count during the recruitment stage nor while doing actual work. If you join as a graduate you'll probably go through some modules of CIMA but don't worry, whatever you learn there won't be needed on the job either.

Basically

1) be "receptive"

2) be visible to senior people

3) blow your trumpet

4) hope for a bit of luck with being scheduled on a decent first project that will allow points 1 to 3 to be achieved

and you will be ok.
