IBM vs E&Y vs Delloitte

graddie

hi All,

I've just finished my masters in computer engineering and looking to kick start my career in consulting.

I've been in various interviews lately and got offers from IBM, E&Y and Delloitte. all in their consulting practice.

I welcome any advice as to which strategy firm (among the 3 above) is best to work for. Thank you in advance and have a nice weekend to all.

Mr Cool to graddie (#1)

Ignoring any salary differences and going only on reputation and personal development opportunities within consultancy, I would say:

Deloitte

E&Y

Any other consultancy

The local chip shop

IBM

If you want to be a techy, not a consultant, then reverse the list.

Have to agree with Mr Cool. EY's strategy function isn't exactly spot on

Mr Cool.. thanks for the insight.. the offers are pretty similar (with IBM at the bottom)... as mentioned, the role is very much the same.

EY'er.. the role offered in EY is in IT advisory.. may I ask why you said "it isn't exactly spot on"? Longer term do you think it'll change?

I have another interview coming up with KPMG.. I don't want to cancel it even with the offers at hand.. i just want to get a feel of the opportunities there.. so, where will you guys place KPMG in your priority list ... thanks again...

Apologies.... I may have jumped the gun a bit with my assessment, seeing as you mentioned "which strategy firm" I had assumed you meant the EY Strategy group.

The ITA function is pretty solid (it's actually the area I sit in, so perhaps there will be some bias). Deloitte is considered the better brand, however from my exp (having colleagues in deloitte and working for EY) Deloitte tends to take people down a more specialised route, with less flexibility in moving across towers. This isn't the case, to the same extent at EY.

The EY ITA group is currently best placed in the 8 arms of EY's Performance Improvement practices, (30% increase in net rev over last year). Some strong client work on going at the moment with few people on the bench... This wasn't the case prior to Christmas when a large proportion of SC's and above were benched.

That's just a bit of a brain dump (I'm feeling a bit groggy after lunch!) and people may challenge some of my opinions but there you go :)

And just to add... with KPMG in the mix I would probably rank it (in terms of general brand perception)

Deloitte

EY

KPMG

IBM

Mr Cool to EY'er (#6)

I bow to EYer's greater knowledge of E&Y ITA (should hope so, he bloody works there)

I agree with EYer's positioning of KPMG

I challenge EYer to a “post-lunch-grogginess” comparison – three pints of well kept cornish beer and a chilli-burger – I shall be chilling this afternoon until about 4pm, at which point I shall be going home.

Mr Cool, I accept defeat!

You have vastly defeated me on PLF! (post lunch fatigue)

Looking forward to a beer after work though :)

Take into account that the Big 4 IT rankings vary per country.

@EY'er- which IT function are you in?

E&Y any day of the week over Deloitte. Deloitte are a very good firm don't get me wrong but it's all a bit machine like. More flex and real people at E&Y

Ey'er to Fury (#10)

Fury - I'm in the SAP group, although I do quite a lot of work with PD (programme delivery)

Furby - Yeah generally I agree with this, although there are some good people at Deloitte and it's not quite as robotic as accenture for example.

Also_Eyer to Ey'er (#12)

Also as a fresh graduate, you may prefer EY. it has a rather good on boarding/ induction process and good knowledge-sharing system. Far better than that of Deloitte.

Culturally similar to Deloitte, although I agree with the posts above. Deloitte is a big machine; EY is a bit more personable.

I would avoid KPMG like the plague. it is so bad, it does not even feature on the list of firms EY and Deloitte compete with. They never seem to be listed as 'competition' on bids.
