Marcus to anon (#1)

The job market is rock bottom. On a par with 2002.

Tony Restell (Top-Consultant.com) to Marcus (#2)

Marcus - Hogwash!!

The site you've directed us to shows a trend data chart ending in Autumn 2009, so no wonder it's showing the market being in the doldrums!

Anon - we're seeing campaign volumes now that are fully three times higher than they were just a year ago (on the permanent side) and a survey we've just undertaken of consulting employers shows 87% expect this upturn to continue or accelerate during 2011.

Hiring in the consulting market is driven more by replacement hiring than it is by hiring to fulfil growth - and most of the leading firms are reporting that staff turnover has rocketed - and so their hiring activity is rocketing too to compensate for this.

Outside of public sector hiring, I can't think of a single recruiter I've spoken to in the last 6 months who would agree with Marcus' assessment.

We don't have such in-depth visibility of the contractor market, but even here I would say my inclination is that the market is pretty buoyant.

Hope this helps

Sir Duncan McBallantyne to Tony Restell (Top-Consultant.com) (#3)

I would go with Tony's advice because he has proven himself time and time again to be a 100% processional pure expert on the consultancy job market whereas Marcus recommends that people wear double cuffs to work and shirts with no chest pocket.

JR to Sir Duncan McBallantyne (#4)

I think you are both right. All the signs are massive growth and lots of hiring relative to last year.

However the growth is from a very low base.

As a job hunter myself I can say from personal experience it is massively better than last year.....but stilll massively worse than any other year I can remember.

I am currently in discussion with 5 consulting firms. Not big 4s but respectable strategy consulting firms and couple of them do operations consulting. However there is fierce competition. You won't make if if you are good, you have to be the best.
