From M&A to Mgmt/Strategy Consulting

I would like to switch my career from M&A/Corporate Finance (at reputable bank) to a mngmt or strategy consulting career.

Which firms are usually keen on having ex-M&A bankers?

All of them

Not all of them. Only those who have a large financial services or corporate finance practice. Oliver Wyman would be first choice, followed by McKinsey corporate finance. You could also look at PwC and Bain Capital although they don't technically count as consulting (PwC you'd be looking at the CF rather than Advisory group; Bain Capital is separate from consulting).

I'm sorry Alien, are you saying that if a M&A Associate from one of the best banks rocked up to the door of any consulting firm, they wouldnt interview for him/her?

If Mark wants a change from M&A work, there's little point in joining McK CF, or any of the Big 4: he'd be doing largely the same work.

I think there is an issue of level here....

I am sure that most consultancies would consider a reputable "M&A guy" for a relatively junior strategy role.

However, for project manager > partner roles in strategy consulting......I am less certain....
