Thoughts welcomed please on the relative benefits of MBA vs. subject specfic masters for someone with 15+ years project and change management bluechip experience, exploring consultancy as next career move.

If you are in the UK and have that much experience, then an MBA or otherwise is not going to help you. At this stage, your experience is far more valuable than any qualifications. It is also a good time to get into consultancy, by the end of the course, it may not be. So, better to jump now

Mark - my own experience is that consultancies tend to regard MBAs much more highly than MAs. This essentially comes down to how they are viewed by clients. Clients are reassured when they see proposals from consulting firms that include Project Managers with backgrounds from leading business schools (INSEAD, Harvard, etc). So MBA qualified staff are much easier to sell on to clients and therefore in much higher demand. For very specialist areas of consulting you may find a specialist MA holds some cachet, but for mainstream consulting this will not be the case.
