Trying to transition from IT Consulting to Management Consulting

Hi fellow forum members:

I graduated in December (MBA Strategy/Entrepreneurship)and recently relocated to the UK from the US. I have 4 years IT consulting experience but no management consulting experience. I apply to positions on this site but have been getting responses like 'there were candidates who were a closer match' and while my skills are impressive, they 'don't exactly match client specifications'. Many of the positions are IT strategy consulting positions which I think should be an easy transition for a former IT consulting. The rejections are pretty demoralizing but I've been thinking of strategies to combat this which include:

Getting my CV professionally reviewed

Trying to set up informational interviews with people in the field

Attending networking or career events (case in point the event in September).

I would be grateful for your thoughts and any suggestions you may have especially wrt the informational interviews and how to navigate the recruiting agencies.

Dear Nik,

I have also idea to enter in consulting business, and I have more expeirence than you ( 17 years)in both IT consulting and telecommunaction. But I also have same impression like you mentioned. I think that is most important to find personal contact in aimed company or to have good recommendation . On the other side there is more chance to find a job in European Union instuitions or NGO in third world.

At the moment I am looking for job in accordance with my expeirence. I hope I will find soon.

Thanks for your thoughts. A little depressing though - if you with 17 years experience are having problems, what does that leave for me. I am working on the personal contacts though and setting up informational interviews to see and be seen so to speak. Networking is definitely the key. Will definitely check on EU institutions and the NGOs.
