MBA - do i REALLY need it?

#1 MBA - do i REALLY need it?

P

Hi,

I'm finishing my second year at MBB and many of my peers are crazy about MBA applications.

But do you folks think MBA is really necessary to succeed in the future?

My understanding is that people apply to a business school in order to land a job in a top-tier consulting firm. But what if I'm already there and I already have a business degree from university?

Is it worth spending a lot of money and two years out-of-business?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

P

Evil Consultant to P (#1)

Hi P,

Despite having an MBA from a top tier school, I firmly believe that you do not have to have one in order to succeed. Does it help you succeed? Quite possibly but will it help you? That's another question entirely because choosing to study for an MBA must be a personal decision.

I took one because it gave me a chance to spend a short, concentrated time on getting a grip on all of the basic business skills that my former employer wasn't going to give me a chance to learn in any reasonable timeframe.

Whether or not it is the right option for you personally, is a question only you can answer.

Hi P,

Fully agree with EC; would suggest you need to really think about it first - what's best for you / where you want to be rather than "follow the herd".

See my post on thread 18970 for some prompts.

Best of luck
