How to move on after current contract

#1 How to move on after current contract

Advice needed, let's just say I have a "friend" who is working for a consulting company, and is on a current contract, and knows it is not something they want to continue. Do you go to the consulting company with two months left and make that known (maybe they can re-assign after the contract), or wait for renewal discussion, or what? A reasonable "excuse" involving the distance from home being too much can be used, instead of the reason of not liking the boss. Anybody been through this or know what's the best approach? Thanks!
