What training do you get, if any? A quick survey!

Okay. There are NO figures on consultancy training, so, could you let me know if you get trained in:

1. Administration (HR and admin processes)

2. Corporate products (tools and methods)

3. Generalist consulting skills (negotiation, project management and presentation skills)

4. Professional standards (e.g. ethics)

Thanks a lot!

Joe

Anon to Dr Joe OMahoney (#1)

In my view, consultancy and training hardly go hand-in-hand, especially at highers levels. After all their bottomline depends on billable work. Consultancies are no better than blooding-sucking mosquitoes and a consultant's worth is as good as his/her performance in the last project.

Anyways, enough of my ranting. My answer to your queries are as follows:

1 - yes

2 - online courses (not classroom based) that can be taken during personal time and not during client/billable time

3 - same as above

4 - ethics?? what's that?

1. Yes - mandatory online training for everyone on timesheet and expenses processes, other online admin training is recommended but ultimately optional (e.g. interview training for those involved in recruitment, performance management training for people managers)

2) Yes - optional training in a variety of forms (classroom, telcon/webcon, brown bag lunch), and most people attend a few training sessions of one type or other depending on their focus and practice area

3) Yes - optional classroom training but oversubscribed/undersupplied so you may wait 1 year+ to get onto some courses; there is also online training in these topics, but I haven't come across anyone who uses them/thinks they're worthwhile

4) Yes - mandatory training as part of induction; informal online "bitesize" training through the year
