Was MBB worth it? Please share

Tim

Hello All,

I would greatly appreciate your input. I have 5 years working experience gained in strategy and private equity. I have recently been made two offers I am contemplating over:

The first is with a MBB - its for a SAC position, would do 2 years and later go to do my MBA via sponsorship etc.

The second is a managerial position in industry, retail. 30% more money than the MBB offer and significantly less hours.

My question to those that did a stint at MBB as juniors and then moved on: was it worth it? Did the experience / brand / prestige pay off later in life?

Coming from an industry with comparable life pressures the lure of an 'easier' environment with more predictable hours (and money) is very luring - however I cant stop thinking this is the easy way and that I am gambling a huge bet. Am I crazy in turning down an MBB offer? Should I focus on longer term goals / rewards?

I appreciate your help and advice, thank you

Tim

Ex-MBB to Tim (#1)

I spent 2 years at MBB. I would never do it again. Killer hours, killer travel, treated like dirt by your seniors, killer appraisal systems (like humble pie? well you'll get PLENTY of it at MBB), and the exit options run out after a year or so of leaving the firm. Also, you'll probably get fired after a few years - most of them do. I'd take the better pay and better lifestyle any day!

What you're facing is the common situation of 'benefit now versus percieved benefit later.

Having just landed a role back in industry, on the back of 5 years consultancy, I would strongly advise on taking the industry option, if you can answer yes to the two following questions.

1 - Have you shown clear ability to deliver and progress in your previous jobs?

2 - Are your previous employers solid blue chips?

If the answer to both of these is yes, I feel you given your background that you would gain a limited amount from the MBB environment, and potentially risk a lot in taking this path.

From my recent experience in the recruitment process, emplyers are interested in where you have come from, but more interested in you and your ability to delvier and progress.
