Have been toying with how we might use Twitter to allow readers to break news about developments at their consulting firm, hiring news, bonus updates, redundancies. A grapevine of consulting developments if you like.
Have just started this in the last 24 hours and would be interested in your thoughts - the first thing really to establish is how many consultants actually use Twitter and therefore how much traction this might generate. Perhaps you could contribute insights on state of the market, etc. via the following link if you are interested in seeing this idea take off:

Thanks to the 145 of you who starting following the twitter feed in the first 24 hours of being live, guess that means there's quite a twitter following amongst consultants...
If you've any gossip to share do send me a message via the twitter page.

How do you feel about breaking news where we can't really name the exact firm but give you a good steer on who we're talking about (eg. where we've learnt something in confidence and so can't name the actual person or firm)?
Is it useful to you to know that eg. one of the Big 4 has seen a collapse in its order book? In which case there's a lot of this kind of thing we could Tweet about that we couldn't necessarily put into a formal news piece on Top-Consultant.
Thoughts?

Yes - but as per a solid newspaper - make sure your source is good and what you are posting is not just forum hear-say.

M&M,
You forgot to say please?
|
Thanks M&M - what I have in mind is reporting insights from conversations with contacts at various consulting firms, to provide a view of the market that's somewhat richer than just what we're able to officially report as news pieces in our conventional news section.
For example, I've just recently learnt that in one of the Big 4 firms a recruitment stranglehold has been put on the consulting business with all new positions having to be pre-approved by the most senior partner in the UK. I've heard this both from a partner within the firm and also from a headhunter working with that firm.
I think this speaks volumes about the state of the UK consulting market, but wouldn't be able to name the firm or write an actual news piece about them or that'd be the end of us hearing such nuggets from them!
That's the type of info I'm talking about - if you click through to the twitter page you'll see the type of things I'm posting.
Useful additional insight for you?

This would all be very very useful.
I've not got a twitter account yet, but having to the sort of information Tony is describing would be enough to get me to sign up for one.

I think it would be useful to have these types of nuggets on Twitter, even if some of them need to be anonymous.
I recognise that there is a difference between the formality and frequency of the usual website/newsletter updates and that of your Twitter feed. I'd be very happy with Twitter posts that strike a balance between the fairly raw flow of rumour on the forum and the more formal, professional articles that make it to Consulting Times and the weekly newsletters.

Was interesting to see at last week's recruiters event that more and more consulting firms and recruiters are starting to use Twitter too. So getting involved is definitely worthwhile if you're considering your career options - perhaps one to check out of a Friday afternoon?

Have put my thoughts on Twitter and why it's worthwhile for consultants to start using it (either for jobhunting or for generating client leads). Have just posted as my final act of the week - enjoy!
