Just how hard is it to move jobs right now?

Have consulting vacancies dried up? There seem to be a lot on this site.

Worth chancing your luck with voluntary redundancy in this market or crazy to walk away from guarenteed salary by choice?

Job adverts (including consulting) always go through a winter lull then pick up in the New Year. If you're seeing jobs advertised that you're suited for then go for VR - it'd be looking a gift horse in the mouth not to. If you're seeing jobs that you're only half-suited for or you only aspire to, then maybe hold on where you are.

Mars A Day to Job hunter (#3)

Hiring is continuing, and MC is far more resiliant than many might think: the situation in broker dealer IB is very different, much more comparable to the dot com bubble and it's a painful but overdue correction.

Your decision whether to take VR should not be based on some adverts in TC or elsewhere for that matter. You could consider VR is you know that your service line/department/practice etc is in line for headcount reduction and VR is stage 1 before MR starts, or the VR is sufficiently generous to enable you some down time.

This time of year the market does slow, so even roles you see advertised are orientated to building up hiring pipelines for Q1 09, and of course things could look very different for any one of those employers then.

Threw my hat at Busch to Mars A Day (#4)

moving jobs right now is not for the faint of heart; but its possible.

One must know the exact type of company, position, and salary you want. If all 3 match up, then go for it. Else, hold off till next yr- there will be much more next yr.
