BCG vs McKinsey vs Bain?

#1 BCG vs McKinsey vs Bain?
28/01/2004 15:28

Dianna

I am currently writing my dissertation and would appreciate readers' feedback about the relative strengths of the major strategy consultancies. What competitive advantages do McKinsey, BCG and Bain hold over each other? What are their individual strengths? What factors enhance their competitiveness vis-a-vis the other two firms? Indeed are there really any major differences between the three? Thanks for your insights!

I don't think there is much difference.

McKinsey has the best brand.

Bain, perhaps, is the stronger of the three at doing commerical/strategic due diligence on private equity transactions (I think).

Bain is the best if you want to pursue a private equity / VC career or become and entrepreneur. McKinsey if you want to work for Corporate America. and BCG is better if you want to become an academic.

McKinsey very strong on its communications, relationships and alumni. BCG more intellectually adventurous and challenging. Bain is good as a launch into private equity but their recruiting criteria is not as demanding

Hey Diana,

Saw that you did an analysis of the strength and weaknesses of the major consulting firms. Could I receive an outcome of your analysis?

Thanks a lot

Ross to John (#3)

Thanks for your post - can you say why Bain is better for entrepreneurship?

As a recent first-time entrepreneur, I'm very interested to now become a consultant as i believe the connections and industry knowledge is second to none. Can you tell me why Bain specifically is good?

Thanks,

Ross

anon to Ross (#12)

Any of them will be fine for a budding entrepreneur to get experience of high-level thinking. I wouldn't waste your time being so fussy and comparing options at this stage. Statistically, the chances of Bain giving you an application are around 0.0002 I think.

Wrong! The chances of Bain giving you an application stands at 100% (simply send your cv and covering letter) the chances of them giving you an offer stand at around 0.0002.

McKinsey hsa more selling bias. PR is better than BCG. One need to look after the customers.

What a debate! I nearly wet myself when I saw this one. How about in terms of international recognition...McKinsey right?

N Crafts to Dianna (#1)

Dianna, I'm currently doing similar research but at PhD level. I am wondering whether you have any statisitical data at all. I'm in the process of compiling a dataset, so if you have any information you could share, I would be grateful. Would anyone else know where I could get data that allows me to compare firm performance?

Mars to aasim (#19)

Let's widen this discussion on MBB into even more critical areas: has anyone yet done an analysis, based on location of offices, size of windows, facing of buildings etc, as to whether McKinsey, Boston or Bain has the healthiest pot plants based on photosynthesis? If anyone from these firms wants to contribute some data on how much water and/or miraclegro they use on pot plants in the London office, we could correlate that data too.

Get a life the lot of you: I assure you MBB don't need any more boring navel gazers.
