Casio

I've been working for a short time at a niche consultancy specialising in marketing strategy. Most of the clients I work with are brand managers etc at FMCGs and I'm enjoying the early responsibility and exposure.

However, my background is not at all marketing based and I'm not sure this is an area I want to become a specialist in. I've been thinking about leveraging my finance based academics to move to consultancy with a finance focus. Can anyone suggest suitable firms? Particuarly ones that are hiring... I've heard many aren't at the minute.

Also how long have I got before I become branded as a pure marketing guy and the exit options narrow!?

People get pigeon holed really quickly. It's amazing how mud sticks. So if you want to do something else, don't dither around.

Hi Casio,

I'm thinking of going the other way. I've started with a blue chip company (not consulting role) not liking it and wanting to get out and thinking of getting into marketing strategy.

I don't come from a marketing background but I thought the work would be interesting and the development for industry work good too.

Can I ask why you want to move out? I'm guessing you don't want to disclose your present employer but do you know a few names of marketing strategy companies recruiting?

Thanks

Hey Cinzia,

They seem to all be hiring, or certainly hiring the 'right people'. If your experience and skills are a good fit you have a very good chance, the industry hasn't greatly slowed. The better agencies are thriving as FMCGs want to use their budgets more carefully given the tough environment.

If you post your email address I can tell you a bit more about my company and opportunities here, I'm reluctant to do so publicly!

Sorry in answer to why I want to move.

There is a lot of hot air marketing. Even at my company which is considered very scientific, very data driven etc it still exists. I like harder side of things, finance etc. It's what I like to read about in the paper, it's what interests me...

Marketing is right for a lot of people, just not me.

Hi Casio,

Opened an email account. Would be really appreciated if you could send me some info.

On the other hand, I started a year ago in a financial role (for similar reasons to what you mention!) so might be able to share my experience if you're interested in anything
