Having joined Accenture recently, I am not too sure about the importance and role of carrer counselor in an individual's progress. Any thoughts?

I don't work for Accenture, but I do know that career counselors in general can be very important. Many of them are very lazy/passive and do nothing. But they should be there to protect your interests in the firm, a 'friend' to look after you when you need to have difficult conversations with the firm or if you're about to get shafted in an appraisal, etc. Many use it as an opportunity to masturbate their own egos but if you get a good one then they can go a long way to making sure you don't get a rough ride.

"masturbate their own egos" - what a load of bol*ocks amongst a bol*ocks thread.

The ones who prioritise it can be a real benefit. Mine was useless, so I found another who I'd worked with on a previous project. He was a much better mentor.
don't expect them to come running after you though - remember the saying 'no-one gives a crap about your career except you!'

Careers counsellors are really important and it's well worth investing the time to build a good relationship with yours (if you can). Your careers counsellor will represent you in round tables and promotion meetings - they should do this on the basis of feedback gathered from assignments - some will put in more effort than others and it helps enormously if they like you and you get on (albeit it should be a process independent of how well you connect). I used to work at ACN and had a great careers counsellor, who supported me for ladderings and promotion, so I know the value that a good counsellor can bring.
Your careers counsellor will never be entirely independent of the firm and the projects that you work on - be honest with him / her, look to them for support as required (i.e. i'd like to roll off this project, can you help) and trust them, but don't forget that they will likely report back on your comments and progress, so don't say anything you wouldn't want to be made public.

and don't be disheartened by stupid comments from people like ppp above - this is a sensible question and is what this forum is for

A career counselor is very important. If Accenture are offering you one, then take it! Grab every opportunity you can. Support and mentorship is very important in this turbulent world.

---, do you add any value to your clients? Based on the garbage you come out with regularly on this forum, I would say no.
Are you the new alias for hmmm?

1. None of your business.
2. Please stick to the topic!
Have A Nice Day!
