Fallout of the Consultancy Purge

Are there any statistics re: lost business for the "big" consulting companies based on many of their former staff having been hired by "big" name clients. The major purge from 2000 - 2003 created a lot of bad feeling for those made redundant and with these former employees frequently moving into decision making roles at clients there seems to be some anti big consultant feeling in the market. Is this the reason for the growth of so many "niche" consulting companies?
