How many people are motivated by the thought of becoming a CEO or some other top position via a first career in consultancy, and how many actually make it? Is it better to join industry earlier than later?

Lot's of McKinsey types become CEOs

Me!
I'm MD of a small company after 3 years in consulting. Planning 3-5 years here before moving on to bigger things.

If you look at the career histories of many FTSE 100 CEO's / CIO's there's quite a few who have worked at Mars, Marks and Spencer and such like.
|
I choose to disagree with the claim that lots of MBBB types become CEO.
That is just some self-serving boasting that is false.
A higher proportion of them in comparison to other consulting firms make the Executive teams in top firms but very few actually get to CEO.

Would like to start my own company and be CEO. Nodesire to climb the greasy pole at someone elses though.

FTSE CEO's don't get paid all that well when you compare it to the ultra serious megabucks you could earn being even a relatively junior investment banker...
|
Why not just do as some of the people ive met.
Register a company (anyone can do that)
Then put on your CV that you where CEO of blabla bla for x years.
viola!

ACAs are the highest represented profession as CEOs (and, more generall,y on boards) of FTSE 100.
Not sure if there ever has been such a survey undertaken but I bet very few have PRINCE2 or even heard of it.
