Don't call me I'll call you.

Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, get some links to some LinkedIn groups and stick your contact details (publicly) on there... headhunters will start calling (although the quality might be dubious).

The other route is to go for quality (and not quantity); get in touch with some respected headhunting companies or try to get in touch with the companies you want to work for.

Mars A Day to Ralph (#1)

Speaking as a HH I hate getting calls from people - invariably if someone has to call me unprompted they are not right for the role. I much prefer to make the approach.

The advice about linkedin etc is useful - you need to get your name known and something about yourself, whether this is a linkedin profile, speaking at some conferences, publishing articles etc. I wouldn't bother sending your CV to HH firms to 'register' - we don't work like that, and if you make the mistake of sending your CV to a company of cowboys it will be round the market before you know what is happening with a resulting loss of market value.
