Which MBA...?

#1 Which MBA...?

Hi all,

I have 4 years experience in the semiconductor industry as an engineer. I'm about to head off for a year travelling around australia and new zealand. When I come back I want to do an MBA and get into consulting.

In between studying for the GMAT, I've been looking at lots of MBA programs. As I am from Ireland, the Smurfit Business School would be a reasonable choice. However, I know that getting into one of the top MBAs (LBS, INSEAD etc) would be much better for consulting.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Smurfit MBA? Is there anything in particular I could be doing while in Oz to beef up my CV etc?

Thanks,

Shane.

It is not necessarily the case that you need to get in to a "top school". Obviously it won't hurt but none of the organisations you have in mind are that narrow minded. Whilst travelling I recommend you do a little more than sight seeing and getting drunk. Do some voluntary work or learn new skills, maybe scuba diving etc. you need to demonstate a level of drive, imagination, commitment etc, lying on a beach all year won't achieve much.

Smurfit is a decent enough school, the reality is that if you haven't already got excellent academics from school and your first degree you're going to struggle getting into top tier mgt cons.

Enjoy the year off! (byron bay on the east coast of aus is bloody great)

Thanks for the suggestions. While I think I will be spending some time lying on a beach, I agree that I'll need to show that I have done something worthwhile for the year.

As for prior academic record - I have a 1st class honours degree in engineering with a few scholarships thrown in for good measure.

I'm still not convinced about Smurfit though. I'd like to get into one of the top strategy firms such as McKinsey, BCG etc. From what I've heard they are exceptionally picky, if not narrow minded. Can simply doing the 'wrong' MBA all but rule you out of those places?
