I want to be a strategy consultant for a firm that targets public sector agencies, especially those that deal with Bioterrorism, Emergency Health Responses and Emergency Management. Does anyone know of any?

You would be better off - as would any victims of the diasters you hope to make money out of - by joining a public agency itself rather than hoping to rob taxpayers yet again.

FYI- I do work in a public agency and I know the internal resources are not available to do these special kind of projects. Government regularly seeks outside contractors for innovation, organizational change, and process improvement. Sounds like you under value consultants.

Try www.northgate-is.com. They, I mean we, do a great deal of public sector work, and it is done very well too. Beware the problems endemic with public sector though, see http://www.computing.co.uk/News/1139432. Make sure you join a firm that knows what it is doing with real professionals doing the job. Also, go for a place with a decent culture. Here the people are genuinely nice and though not completely free of politics the culture is fun and pleasant. Try getting an Accenturan to say that.

John,

I am in a similar boat, looking to work in the field of emergency preparedness, national security and homeland defence. Are you an American citizen? I am a Canadian citizen. I have come across a couple of positions, however, they require US citizenship for security clearances. I recently completed a DFAIT internship in the US, primarily studying issues of bioterrorism, regional preparedness, and inter-jurisdictional cooperation, and would now like to continue in this field. Please let me know if you are an American citizen, and I will forward you the sites regarding available positions. Take care.

Hi Jared,

Yes I am an American Citizen. I am working in local government on all the things you mention - BT, Homeland Security, etc. I am a deputy commissioner in the Health Department. I would appreciate you sending me the sites. Can I do anything for you?

John

John,

Good to hear from you. I will put together a list of the sites I came across, and forward them ASAP. Where in the US are you working? The internship I recently completed was in Easton, PA, at the Robert B. & Helen S. Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government. We worked directly with members from both NJ & PA Health Departments, as well as PEMA, and the Department of Defense, more specifically, with representatives from Homeland Defense. Anyways, I will forward the sites by Sat at the latest. If there is anything else I can do, please feel free to contact me at your convenience, and feel free to use my yahoo address. Take care. Jared

John, I apologize for taking so long in getting back to you. The following is a list of some Management Consulting Groups that I have been looking at regarding homeland security and defense work. 1) Booze Allen & Hamilton, 2) Cassidy and Associates, www.cassidy.com, 3) American Management Systems(AMS), www.ams.com, 4) DFI, www.dfi-intl.com, 5) Intellibridge, www.intellibridge.com, 6) Plexus Consulting Group, www.plexusconsulting.com. I know of a few more firms, but unfortunately I cannot remember their names. Once I come across them, I will forward them as well. Hope this info helps with your search.

In addition, if you have not already looked at both RAND & the Brookings Institute, you may want to look over their sites. Although they are not management consulting firms, they do a lot of research and analysis work in the fields of national security, homeland security and homeland defense. Talk to you soon. Jared Gardner
