How much chance moving from telecom engineering to consulting?

#1 How much chance moving from telecom engineering to consulting?

Hi All,

I am seriously considering to move from telecomm industry engineering work to a consulting job, and will start to look for a new job after christmas.

Basics about myself:

Master degree in Electronics;

9 years in telcomm engineering, bluechip companys;

Worked in R&D and customer support;

Expertise in SW development, project management and wireless telecomm technologies;

Management experience on small team and projects;

Presentation skill (not strong, and non-native english speaker);

Analysis skill (good).

My idea job is to do techinical consulting, helping customers to do projects better with my expertise. I did a lot research, seems PA, Analysys and Ovum etc are active players in telecomm sector in the UK. Could anyone tell me how much chance to get into (or get interviewed) to these companies?

Any comment is appriciated.

Nobody can answer? Do I have to do a MBA to get into consulting?

You may have the skills and all that, but if you dont have the network its almost impossible. Well, its also about good timing and having luck, a lot of luck.

PA would be an interesting one to try, given your more technical background.

They have 'technical' practices (e.g. product and process engineering) based in Cambridge and ventures which look at wireless technology e.g. UbiNetics. They also have a growing telecoms practice in the UK.

Alternatively how about a strategy role within your current organisation? I work in corporate strategy (ex PA) for a telecoms infrastructure company. My job involves a large amount of senior exposure and aiding major decisions (e.g. acqusitions, network builds, major customer negotiations).

Regardless of where you apply, they will want to make sure you have an understanding of the industry (given your background this shouldn't be a problem) and also that you can display/adapt into consulting skills (bigger picture view, rigorous analysis, ability to problem solve).

Good luck

Thank you Sam and Anon.

I don't think I have chance to make an internal move within my cooperation. Currently I am working in a R&D department far away from HQ, no exposure or relationship with marketing department at all.

I came to this Country 2.5 years ago and feel a little bit stuck with my current employer. As someone on this forum said, I feel I could make a much greater contribution elsewhere and actually be rewarded properly for it. Will start looking for jobs after X'mas. This is will be my 1st time seriously looking for a job in this country. Finger crossed.

what is your salary up to? Maybe the big telecom firms&operators might be of interest (ericsson,nokia,vodafone etc.)

Thanks for the advice, Sam. My salary is about 46k + 10% bonus + stock options. Although not very good, I think it is not too bad either.

Salary is not the most important reason of my desire to change. I am more worried about my competence, which my current daily job adds nothing to it. Also I see no career progress within the office.

All the companies mentioned above have a Business Consulting unit which works with strategic and marketing issues. I happen to now that this group consist of 170 people at Ericsson. Notice that this is globally, and its not much for such big company. This indicates the importance of the quality of their work.

Personally Id be very happy to work within such group (hence not ERP related but telecom infrastructure etc.) but my age is the only obstacle at the moment...

Good luck!

Hi,

I also work in telecoms although for a network operator - as a technical architect for billing systems. I too am interested in working for a consultancy. Any ideas of any that are recruiting at the moment?

Firstly, I cannot for the life of me think why you would want to make that move. However, if you do, your best shot is to aim for technology practice areas within decent consulting firms. It is only worth making the move if you go to a top level company. You will be utterly depressed if you go tier 3 having worked for a decent telco.

Hi Options,

Could you expand a little on why you feel that way? Do you feel it is better to work for a network operator? I would have thought the money would be better at a consultancy - as well as the variety of work. The opportunities to re-enter industry with the breadth of experience that consultancy would yield would surely be more valuable than staying put?
