MBA or ....?

#1 MBA or ....?

Keith

I'm a 40-year old Director in the Education business. I already have a PhD in a more esoteric field, but in order to move into strategy consulting (where I think I belong), I need a stronger foundation in the 'mechanics' of business. I see two general options: enroll in an MBA or construct my own 'unofficial' MBA by enrolling in a variety of graduate level seminars and courses. How might employers interpret the less 'official' approach? Is the MBA route the only path considered legitimate by employers (particularly those in strategy consulting)?

Keith - I would say the value of your education to a strategy consulting employer is in small part the lessons that you learn... but predominantly the credibility or "seal of quality" that the MBA etc. lends to your CV when this is being put forward to clients.

Clients are being asked to part with thousands of pounds a day for your advice, so the sales process is made much easier if consultants CVs can be put forward that have an INSEAD, LBS, etc MBA on them. Your DIY approach I'm afraid might teach you as much or even more than a conventional MBA - but it would fall down in this key area of credibility...

Are you thinking about moving into Strategy consulting? If so then an MBA is the way to go, although institution name matters and costs!

Are you a science/engineering PhD? Then, another option, if you are thinking about your own business or working in a high-tech firm is an MSc in Science Entrepreneurship at Cass Business School (former City Uni Business School) (a leader in finance MSc courses and a strong MBA reputation). The course is aimed those looking to learn the essentials of business and finance PT, it can be accommodated while doing a full time job too.
