I have just transitioned from a three decade career in IT Senior Management (Outsourcing deals the last decade), into private practice IT Outsourcing consultancy. I am networking contacts, having meeting etc, but I feel I need a more stuctured approach to searching for clients. Any advice?

Hi Glen,

I'm not sure if you have already considered to contract an advisory board. What you have to do is to establish a well-defined targed market, identifying the most influent players amongst your potencial clients and then to find out influent people who could put you in touch with top decision-makers of each of them.

As I don't know which markets you are willing to explore, maybe necessary to elicit some data about the major niches to explore with different groups of clients, so that you can set appropriate offerings for each one.

Hope this helps you!

I'm jealous of you working in Sydney - been there for work once and climbed the bridge - great place! Having been independent for 5 years after 10 years at PwC I've only recently discovered a great source of marketing advice for consultants - go look at www.actionplan.com. Its very USA in tone but the practical advice is spot on. Its worth paying the money to download the workbook too, as it gives you step by step help to present yourself to best effect. The big mistake that most of us, independent or big firm, make is that in presenting ourselves we say what we do first(services, skills, tools, processes, etc) - we don't present ourselves in terms of the issues clients really face e.g no one actually needs outsourcing (sorry :) what people might need are ways to make 'support' activities for them more effective and less distracting - outsourcing is one approach. This site helps you create verbal and written propositions which make your networking much more effective.

Good luck - Alan Arnett

Hi,I would suggest that you advertise asking interested companies to talk to you. This shows quick results normally.

India has been a favourite destination for most companies to outsource their needs. If you need help here we could work a business arrangement a)To help identify outsourcee companies b)To set it up once this fructifies. By the way I run my own consultancy in INDIA.Let me know by email if you wish to progress this idea.

Thanks Alan, I will give Action Plan a try. I guess I did not explain my niche very well, you might want to have a look at my website at: www.infravisor.com.au which is pretty basic but it is getting results.

Professor Tom Lambert

Glen,

From the indication that you have given of a long career in IT I guess that you are an ex-executive at that critical age of the type that my colleagues and I work to get back into business www.executivesrecycled.co.uk . In spite of the geographical distance you might like to give the website a visit for ideas in general.

For something more specific you may want to visit my website www.tom-lambert.org and take a glance at my very practical newsletters that are replete with detailed information on no cost ways to have clients beat a path to your door. Alternatively you can get the benefit of more than 20 years research into what the top-earning consultants do to build their businesses by reading my best-seller "High Income Consulting". Meanwhile, whatever you choose to do, may I wish you all the best.

Yours

Tom Lambert ("the Consultants' Consultant")

CEO the international Centre for Consulting Excellence

Professor of Consulting Rushmore University
