interview and case study tips

#1 interview and case study tips

Alexi

Hi,does anyone have any concrete advice for consulting interviews and especially how to tackle case studies? Is there a generally useful approach/book that is useful for MOST consultancies, or do individual firms have preference for different interview styles? I have only ever had 1 interview (for an internship) and so am very inexperienced!

1. Make sure you understood the goal of the case study

2. Make sure know all details you need to know

3. Ask for a couple minutes to think

4. Structurize the problem for yourself, define a process to go from the starting point (i.e. the information you have) to goal (which you clearified before); don't hesitate to use pen & paper

5. Lead your interviewer step by step through your thoughts; always verify that he's still following your train of thoughts

6. good luck, it very much depends on the attitude of your interviewer...

Regards,

Oliver

Thanks for the advice...is there any source of case studies with which to practice other than some examples found on the websites? Also, is it just myth that there arise some interview questions along the lines of 'what kind of furniture would you be' (mentioned on my university careers website!)

I have never heard about that. but I am also trying to prepare for a case study interview and have never had one before. I am looking on the web and there are number of books but I am not sure how can you prepare for it. I think it largely depends on your interview as well. there is no right answer and I am pretty sure that they just want to see your thinking process and if you waffle or not. mia

Check out www.monitor.com

It's the web page of Monitor Group with M.E. Porter among its founders. They used to have quite a few case studies on their web page.
