Will following a 'Technology Stream' limit my direction?

#1 Will following a 'Technology Stream' limit my direction?

Nick Bourne

I have recently been offered a place with Deloitte Consulting on their Technology track. I applied for their Strategy & Operations stream, but there are very few places on this and they said my chances of getting onto the other track are slim to nothing. My concern is that by following a Technology stream I will be limited in what I do. I want to learn the fundamentals of consulting, gain lots of client exposure and interaction, and be involved in diverse projects and situations, with a view to possibly doing an MBA further down the line - will Technology offer this? All advice and insight is much appreciated. Many thanks, Nick.

I think that you will get what you are looking for at Deloitte's Technology Track. The only thing you should keep in mind is that the likelihood to start in the Technology Track, and moving afterwards to Strategy & Operations is almost zero. Because of the Management Buy Out (Braxton) lots of people expect that Deloitte will change dramatically since now the former Partners really own the business. I would not suggest to join Deloitte at this time, better look for a career in industry before, and try to join them (in better times) as Senior Consultant

Arne! Good to hear from you - and yes I am the same Nick Bourne. My dissertation went very well and I got 78% that played a crucial role in getting a first class degree. Many thanks for your help and insight - in the end I managed to get interviews with a director at McKinsey, as well as another 10 interviews with partners and managers at a range of other firms - such as Accenture, Deloittes and what was then Andersen Business Consulting. I got a great insight into the business, made some very useful contacts and am currently working for a small financial consulting firm - thoughtweb - doing some work for a global investment bank, which is great fun. I'm working here for the rest of the year, then disappearing round South America for 8 months next year before joining Deloitte Consulting in September 2004! How's your work going in Holland?
