Anon Graduate

Having received offers for graduate positions at LEK Consulting and Marakon Associates (and ExxonMobil) I was looking for advice and comments on the two firms. Objective advice would be welcomed.

Tony Restell, Top-Consultant.com

Firstly I would say congratulations on getting offers from 2 such firms in the current climate. Graduate recruitment in consulting has been slow of late, so this is a great achievement. Re. which offer to accept, both are considered "top-tier" consultancies, and as such are great names to have on your CV.

As an ex-Consultant at a similar firm, I would recommend that you think about the people you have met at each of the consultancies as the deciding factor. In consulting you will spend a LOT of working hours with these people. More importantly you will spend many SOCIAL hours with them when you are working away from home and staying in hotels on projects. Of the people you met, whom would you rather spend an evening eating out with? Whom would you rather be stuck in a hotel in Glasgow or Madrid with for a whole weekend? Who else has been made an offer with each of the firms, and do you "click" with them? Essentially with which of the firms did you feel more comfortable - more like you fitted in?

Hope this helps, and if you don't feel you know the answer to the above questions, then ask to go for lunch with some recent graduates at each of the firms and see how you get on with each of them. Rgds, Tony

I have worked for two years for an ExxonMobil affiliates but I didn't know anything about the Marakon Associates. Anyways I know that ExxonMobil is a very big company and the career progression is very slow but it might be different in the consultancy one. By the way I left the job and I am know looking for a new carreer in London, where now I am based, any advices?

Ilan

R

Clearly Marakon is the more strategic and more highly regarded within the "strategy" end of the consulting market. LEK has reputation(I am led to believe) of being more technical (spreadsheting, data analsysis etc). Marakon have a lot of financial clients, not sure about LEK.

Really depends on your strenghts
