#1 graduate positions in UK consulting

T. Bashford

I have graduated from The University of London Royal Holloway College and I am looking for a graduate position within a consulting firm operating in the UK. I have graduated in Management Studies BSc. (Hons.) at 2:1 and recieved 1st Class recognition for my dissertation studying organisational learning and knowledge transfer during merger and acquisition activity. At this early stage of my career I welcome all oportunities to move forward from an academic background to progress and learn within a commercial context. For more information or to contact me please e-mail tom_bashford@hotmail.com.

#2 Try to get some experience outside consulting

Tom - Most of the consulting industry has dramatically cut down on graduate recruiting these last 18 months, and in many cases there are still people who have been made offers waiting to be able to join as start dates have been put back to counter a shortage of work for new recruits. With this backdrop in mind, I would suggest you try to get an analytical / strategic role in industry. Then in 18 months when the consulting firms are looking to address staffing shortages, you will have the right types of skills to get an experienced hire position with one of the firms. HTH Ben

As a recent graduate determined to find a career in consulting, I welcome the advice that experience in an analytical / strategic role in industry may provide valuable experience and a bridge into the currently saturated graduate consultancy market. I openly welcome any advice on how I may identify the right types of skills to later get an experienced hire position in a consultancy firm, and also on which industrial sectors are currently recruiting graduates into analytical / strategic positions.

Tom,

You might consider contacting the Career Research and Advisory Council in Cambridge they are an organisation whose sole purpose is helping graduates move into the commercial world. They hold a number of networking events that bring together grads and employers and they have ties with most consulting organisations. Let me know if I can be of help.

Cheers,

Joe
