Bain Interview: Case Study Section

#1 Bain Interview: Case Study Section
04/01/2007 11:42

John

Hi All,

Next week I will have my first ever case interview with Bain (I have a few others lined up in the near future). I have been obviously studying how to answer case studies effectively, but I really wont have an idea of how Ill react untill I have experienced one.

I am coming from a non business background and would thus like to ask the forum

1) What can I expect in terms of case interview format?

2) When drawing diagrams etc in case interview, should I be pedantic about detail?

3) Does anyone have an idea if I will be asked about entry to new market, M&A etc or can I expect to be asked on everything that the case interview books preach?

4) Should I memorize specific frameworks, or roughly know them so I can emphasize my own logic in the answer? (In this case I would be afraid of missing out on something 'obvious' that business students will reel off in seconds)

5) How early should I show up?

Thanks in advance to the forum for any tips, help or answers to my questions.

Tony Restell (Top-Consultant.com) to James Down (#6)

My day has been made by one of my students having emailed to say they've been hired by Bain and made it through the case study interviews as a result of having been on my monthly <a href=http://www.top-consultant.com/UK/events/Article_display.asp?ID=140>case study interview workshop</a>. Thanks for sharing this with me Gael!! For anyone else struggling with case study interview preparation, do consider signing up for the next such conference call on 6th April:

<a href=http://www.top-consultant.com/UK/events/Article_display.asp?ID=140>http://www.top-consultant.com/UK/events/Article_display.asp?ID=140</a>

Here's what Gael had to say:

"Following your presentation on how to ace the study case last year, I wanted to thank you for your precious advice in my interview preparation. (I received an offer from) Bain & Company where I successfully passed the 3 rounds of interviews/ 6 cases.

This, I must say, would not have been possible without participating in your training. I would recommend your class to anyone who is seeking a consulting position to significantly enhance and optimize their preparation."

Bit of a shameless plug I know - but it's made my day to receive this email... and would doubtless make many of your days to sail through the case study interviews like Gael has!

:-)

Hope to see you on a future call.

Tony Restell (Top-Consultant.com) to Dave B (#11)

Dave - the agenda for these calls covers the following points, with calls lasting lasting a little over 1h30:

o The format of interviews in the consulting industry

o The interviewer’s point of view – what are they trying to establish?

o The two main types of case study questions. A review of each type and then an interactive worked example of each type:

--- The market-sizing / "Mission impossible" type questions

--- The Condensed Project Assignment type questions

o Strategies for Success in case study interviews

o Dealing with group case study situations and final round interviews where you may have to present your case study findings

So pretty comprehensive and the key thing I think is that it raises readers' confidence about dealing with case study interviews - at least that's been the main message from all the success stories I've been getting back over the last months. For further details see:

<a href=http://www.top-consultant.com/UK/events/Article_display.asp?ID=140>http://www.top-consultant.com/UK/events/Article_display.asp?ID=140</a>

Best of luck. Tony
