Advice re: work experience

Theresa

I have just finished studying a BCom Degree with majors in law and business management and would like to ultimately work as a strategic consultant. I have been in the UK for less than a year and don't really know which firms I should be approaching to gain work experience (also which type of job would give me the experience). Which skills do I need to acquire. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Theresa

OK, it is not obvious where your country of origin is, nor is it clear to me if you wish to stay in the UK. Assuming you want to stay in the UK, I recommend that you first of all identify an industry tht you find interesting, then identify organisations that do significant levels of trade with your country of origin in the industry of your choice. You should then phone the UK offices to identify recruitment policies for graduates/direct entrants. This will give you an idea as to whether you are likely to gain employment with them in the UK or not. As you ultimately want to become a strategic consultant it will be quite important to seek work within a head office, or at least a major trading unit (otherwise you ar not likely to pick up relevant experience to achieve your goal). If you give a litle bit more information regarding your area of interest and country of origin I may be able to give more specific advice, but what I have wrtten here should hopefully at least trigger a few thoughts, ideas, actions for you.

Hi, You need to choose your area of specialization where you would like to excel. Keeping in view your majors I would suggest the management as it would be difficult to proceed with law without having any experience.

Best of luck,
