Offered and Accepted - can it change?

#1 Offered and Accepted - can it change?

Hey,

Hi Guys i have been offered a job and consequently accepted it.

I am now being sent a written contract. Should i stop searching for a job - or should i wait until i sign the contract. I am just concerned they could now change their decision on an offer? Has that happened to anyone before?

Cheers

Paranoid Android

Most reputable companies will honour a written offer but technically till the point there is a written contract between the parties nothing is certain so if you're the glass half empty type, I'd suggest you keep some irons in the fire. Generally speaking there is nothing to lose by doing that anyway.

Generally offers tend to be conditional on things like references etc. anyway and you could also be dismissed the day you join - all these events are low probability events but obviously possible. In general if the offer is from a good company, a written offer should give you a reasonable feeling of certainty.

Plus....

if they change the offer walk away. That will just be the first time they move the goal posts.

Disillusioned

Both IBM and Accenture did this about 3 years ago and withdrew a whole slew of their grad offers shortly before the start date.

Perhaps this explains some of the reasons why these firms (and IBM in particular) have reputations as such harsh employers

i would add, companies normally keep people on the pipe line and sometimes it never goes to a final offer. why to consider only one application?? in consulting companies change needs fast, so should also consultants

A signed offer is a legal document. If they change their mind, you take them to court.

What about a verbal offer?
