Anxious Consultant

I have been working in New York for the past 4 yrs.. first with Deloitte Consulting and then with PricewaterhouseCoopers in their Info, Comm Strategy practice was let go end of last year. I have been looking for the past couple of months in the Neew York/US market and it doesnt seem to be picking up, but seems like UK is picking up as i see few advertisements etc coming up. As a result i was thinkin of coming to London for say 2-3 weeks in Beg/Mid May for a couple of weeks and look for jobs there (i dont have a EU work permit), but am hoping my Engg deg and my MBA and working with 2 of the Big 4 would help. Can someone pls tell me or advise me about this move, as in would it make a big diff if I am there personally. In addition, can anyone also let me know which are the good headhunters/placement companies - both for consulting and Industry. or if you have any leads etc i would really appreciate it. I had been doing great at PwC... made the top 10% of my reviews and now i am here. If anyone can pls give me advice/leads etc or any inputs i would really really appreciate it. thanks.

Ben

Firstly I think being available to interview in the present market is critical. You will not get anywhere otherwise. There are too many good candidates in the market for recruiters to waste time on people they can't meet. I would also caution you that not having a work permit is likely to be an issue. In the boom times, these can be easily obtained. But with a surplus of candidates in the market, few companies are likely to go out of their way to get you one if they can hire EU candidates with the same credentials (there are a lot of ex-Big 5 in the market at the moment). Also not my area of specialism, but I believe companies have to demonstrate that they had difficulty hiring an EU citizen for the post before they will be authorised a work permit. I'm not sure any would be able to demonstrate such difficulties in the current market.

Sorry to sound negative, but it sounds like quite a commitment of time and money you are contemplating, so feel you should be aware of the uphill struggle you could be facing...

John

I have to agree. It will be an uphill struggle to make any impact as there are 200 applicants for every Programme Manager position at this time. I have no doubt that it is the same in all disciplines.
