Are there consulting opportunities for someone with my background? I am an Mechanical Engineering graduate with 10 years experience in the Automotive sector in positions ranging from engineering liaison, Project manager, Technical sales manager, Account manager to Strategic marketing manager. Account value worth some $450m pa reporting directly in to Director and Vice President level both internally and externally. My preconception for the big consultancy firms is office blocks full of Accountants working till midnight every night all called Nigel, hopefully someone can enlighten me?

Fraser. Engineers are well regarded by consulting firms (because of quantitative skills and logical approach to problem solving.)But you need to show you've moved away from the swarfega and into a business facing role (and sales & marketing is not the best springboard for consulting). Also, 10 years in automotive shows loyalty but consulting firms also value variety. The big consulting firms are not all just full of accountants (one big 5 firm claims only 7% of its consultants have an accountacy qualification) but working to midnight (maybe not every night) comes with the territory. And no doubt quite a few consultants are called Nigel: I have no stats on that. Yours, Don Leslie

Hello Don, Thanks for your reply. Yes certainly for the last 3 years i have been very much working away from the engineering and in the high level business environment. Automotive is not the only string to my bow as i have also worked in the oil/gas industry (both North Sea and south East Asia) as well as building services in Australia. That aside however the automotive sector offers a great deal of variety into all types of business from heavy engineering into state of the art electronics working with all manner of blue chips. I think that i have a good grounding in all of these as well as an excellent understanding of how to do business in a multi-national environment having worked lengthy stints in Japan, USA and South Africa. Question for you is which of the big consulting firms undertake work that best matches my skill set? Thanks, Fraser.

Fraser. In principal all the large, well-known operational consultancies will service the automotive, oil & gas and leading-edge technology industries. So will most of the large strategy houses. However, it is not a good time to be exploring openings in consulting as there are so few about.

I have only two clients looking for someone from the car industry: one seeks a good bachelors in engineering and five years in production engineering in the likes of Ford or BAe; the other requires an MBA and French or German business-standard language skill. If you think you might be close to the mark on the latter one, email me your CV at dfl@blt.co.uk
